Barfoed's test is based on the reduction of Cu2+ ions to Cu+ in an acidic medium. In this case, the presence of complexing agents is not necessary since the Cu2+ ions are stable in an acidic solution. Copper(II) acetate is used as a source of Cu2+ ions, at the same time providing acetate ions needed
