| Description | U.S. Surgeon General Everett Koop appears at the NHDC with Dr. Paul Brand to present Brand with the Surgeon General's Medallion, an award that recognizes his national and international accomplishments in Hansen's Disease research, particularly in the area of restoring hand function to the disabled. Dr. Brand offers remarks as well. In attendance is the Reverend John Sams, head of the American Leprosy Mission. Sams also speaks briefly, and is given a silver doubloon that represents the Carville facility and its mission. Koop receives a special copy of the USPHS seal from Dr. Trautman, head of the NHDC.
