Summary
| Description | NASA's Glenn Research Center gets a boost to its icing research project with the addition of an S-3 Viking jet. The S-3 has eight times the range of Glenn's present turbo prop aircraft. NASA's DHC-6 Twin Otter also known as the 'flying laboratory' has logged over 22 years of valuable service. On the ground, Glenn's enormous Icing Research Tunnel can handle large-scale airplane parts for testing. Inside the tunnel, cold water is sprayed on the test parts to simulate formation of ice on aircraft surfaces during flight. The tunnel can also produce airspeeds from 50 to 400 miles per hour and temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. NASA's Glenn Research Center is working to increase aircraft safety through its icing studies. |
