Summary
The International Space Station's next residents are preparing for their upcoming mission. Crew members are Expedition 10 Commander and NASA ISS Science Officer Leroy Chiao, and Soyuz Commander and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov. Their six-month mission will begin Oct. 9 with a launch aboard a Soyuz spacecraft from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Dr. Chiao, a chemical engineer, became an astronaut in 1991. A veteran of three Space Shuttle flights, he's logged more than 36 days in orbit, including 26 hours in spacewalks. Sharipov graduated from Moscow State University and the Air Force Pilot School, becoming a cosmonaut in 1992. In 1998, he served as a mission specialist on the crew of STS-89, the eighth Shuttle mission to dock with Russia's Mir space station. Expedition 10's primary mission is to continue maintaining the station while performing as many scientific tasks as possible.
