Description This video shows, Bruce Tiller, manager of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket Boosters Office, talking about the need for a 5th segment addition to the SLS solid rocket boosters that will provide more thrust and power to launch the SLS and Orion spacecraft to the moon on future Artemis missions. The five-segment solid rocket boosters on the SLS rocket are the largest, most powerful boosters ever built for flight and produce more than 75 percent of the rocket’s thrust capability. On Sept. 2, in Promontory, Utah, NASA plans to complete a two-minute hot fire test of a flight support booster like the ones that will launch the SLS on missions beyond Artemis III. NASA and Northrop Grumman, the SLS booster lead contractor, will use data from the test to evaluate the motor’s performance using potential new materials and processes for future booster performance.
