Summary

Description (Critical) As part of a series of "Infants at High Risk" this program reviews the theory and practice of intravenous and oral feeding of the premature newborn. Basic steps in the digestive process are described and the limitations and/ordeficiencies of the premature infant are delineated. The composition of IV solutions and oral formulas commonly used are spelled out. In addition, specific recommendations are given regarding daily requirements of fluids, electrolytes and calories. Special techniques for the various forms of tube feedings are demonstrated. This is a well done program but could profit for its comprehension by additional printed material. It presents an excellent introduction to theory and practice of special feeding in the premature infant and should prove useful for medical students, pediatric residents, nurses and practitioners dealing with the high-risk newborn.
