Summary
| Description | (Critical) This program, part of a series on leaders in psychiatry, presents an interview with Silvano Arieti, who discusses his basic views on the psychological factors important to the etiology and treatment of depression. He contrasts the biochemical theories of depression with his own viewpoint which assumes the presence of psychological factors and compares pharmacotherapy to psychotherapy, his preferred method. Lastly, he describes two common lifestyles that often result in depression. This program clarifies these concepts as one man's views on the nature of depression and does not purport to be theoretically inclusive. The efficacy of medication and other treatments of depression is not fully assessed. Visualization are interesting, but the sound level is variable and distracting. This module is recommended as an adjunt to lectures on psychotherapy for graduate study and continuing education. Credits: Silvano Arieti. |
