Summary

Description Two all-black seabirds excitedly dance around each other using emphatically coordinated wing, bill and head gestures during courtship, with countless other albatross sitting on nests in the background.
After many months at sea, black-footed albatross, or ka'upu in Hawaiian, reunite at nesting sites on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge for elaborate courtship dances, Nov. 23, 2024.
These beautiful seabirds began arriving on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in November, excitedly reuniting with mates they haven’t seen since summer.

The first ka'upu chicks will start hatching in January on the wildlife refuge in the northwestern reaches of the Hawaiian archipelago.
