Summary

Description The purpose of this program is to show the varying degrees of severity of smallpox and the procedures for treatment and prophylaxis including some recently developed techniques. The program also demonstrates the differential clinical and laboratory diagnosis of smallpox and chickenpox. The clinical manifestations are illustrated in detail by animation and examples of cases. The clinical symptoms of both variola major and variola minor are compared and contrasted. Symptoms of the malignant and benign confluent smallpox are also briefly described. The laboratory diagnosis using the embryonated egg technique to recover the v. virus and the complement fixation test for the detection of viral antigen in order to distinguish the variola vaccinia antigen from those of the chickenpox are demonstrated.
