Summary

Description (Critical) This program identifies the equipment needed, comments on the importance of explaining the procedure to the child, and demonstrates the positioning of the child and methods of inserting the needle in order to begin an I.V. in children. The presentation discusses only short term care in an ambulatory setting with no reference to long term methods of scalp and leg vein I.V. insertion used for long term I.V. therapy in infants. Also, the procedure is demonstrated on a very cooperative child and does not discuss difficulties encountered when trying to insert a needle in an infant or uncooperative child. Thus, this program is of limited value for pediatric nursing and allied health students.
