Summary
| Description | For the 73rd straight year, students in southwest Oregon planted seedlings at the Lower Umpqua Tree Plant event. The tree planting, running annually since 1945, took place April 3 this year on private timberland. The final tally: 124 elementary school students planted approximately 1,000 Doug fir seedlings. The planting near Reedsport, Oregon, was co-sponsored by the BLM, Oregon Department of Forestry, Coos Forest Protective Association and Roseburg Resources. In addition to planning, the BLM provides seedlings and shovels for the event. The students from schools in Reedsport and Elkton could be seen breaking into two and three-person teams, carrying personal bags of seedlings and shovels to search for the perfect planting spots. Last year, youth contributed almost 18,000 hours of volunteer service for the BLM in Oregon and Washington.
