Summary

Description This program, produced at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for WRAMC-TV, is a lecture by Dr. Leonard E. Swischuk on hyaline membrane disease (infant respiratory distress syndrome). The presence of interstitial air shows up in chest X-rays of infants as visible bubbles, which Dr. Swischuk divides into three different types: distended terminal bronchioles, pulmonary interstitial emphysema, and focally distended alveoli with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. A series of slides of both X-rays and microscopic images of tissue is used to illustrate the pathophysiology for the development of these bubbles. Credits: Leonard E. Swischuk.
