Summary
| Description | This is a review of quick and responsible interventions in cases of psychotic, verbally and physically assaultive patients arriving in the emergency room. These reactions are usually precipitated by drug intake or stress in labile patients. Several demonstrations discuss and demonstrate potential encounters and three major management techniques. These techniques are: (1) non-physical, verbal control by establishing rapport, authority and giving choices of behavior; (2) physical restraint and (3) administration of medication with consideration of side-effects. Finally, disposition options are discussed on the basis of various criteria. The accompanying booklet, provides listings of medications, as well as a post test. The producer will give four hours of continuing medical education credit if the program is completed according to instructions. Credits: Developed under the supervision of Richard C. Levy, Alan D.
