Apollo 11 was the NASA spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon on 20 July 1969. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Lunar Module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility while Michael Collins orbited above in the Command Module.
Armstrong's first steps on the lunar surface, broadcast live to an estimated 600 million television viewers worldwide, are among the most watched moments in human history. His words — “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” — have become one of the most quoted phrases of the 20th century. The crew returned safely to Earth on 24 July 1969.
