F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is the first vampire film ever made — an unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with the names changed after the studio could not obtain the rights.
Nearly destroyed by court order after Stoker's estate won a copyright lawsuit, it survived in private collections and is now in the public domain worldwide. Max Schreck's portrayal of Count Orlok remains one of cinema's most haunting performances.
