| Description | The purpose of this teaching presentation is to describe and demonstrate a technique of closed chest tube thoracotomy. This objective is achieved with the aid of several male clinical subjects, diagrams, and X-rays. Nine key steps for performing a closed chest tube thoracotomy are identified. These steps are described and demonstrated on a middle-aged male who suffered a penetrating wound to the chest with a resulting hemopneumothorax. After the puncture site is located, the operative site is prepared, a local anesthetic is administered, and the chest wall is incised superficially and dissected. The complete penetration is then verified using finger dissection, after which the clamped chest tube is inserted and secured by means of sutures, and the lateral incision is closed with interrupted sutures.
