| Description | (Critical) This program discusses individual differences in the rates of motor, social, and language development in babies and infants. Two standard tests, the Denver Developmental Screening Test and the Gessell Developmental Test, used by professionals to assess stages of development, are described. Environment, genetic influences, and male/female maturation rates are discussed. The wide acceptable range in the rate of individual development is emphasized, and low correlation between rate of early development and long term success is highlighted. Children are depicted in both real life and testing situations, but no examples of abnormal development are provided and treatment of abnormals is not discussed. Interviews with authorities are overused. This elementary program is recommended with reservations for basic courses in developmental psychology. |
