Summary

NASA Armstrong Responds to Call for COVID-19 Solutions Armstrong Flight Research Center in California partnered with Virgin Galactic, The Spaceship Company (TSC), Antelope Valley College, to solve possible shortages of critical medical equipment to assist the local hospital. One of the task force’s first efforts was to build an oxygen helmet to treat COVID-19 patients exhibiting minor symptoms and minimizing the need for those patients to use ventilators. The device functions like a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to force oxygen into a patient’s low-functioning lungs. From the garage of Armstrong engineer Mike Buttigieg building a prototype successfully tested by doctors, to producing 500 in The Spaceship Company’s facility in Mojave, California, the helmet is now waiting the FDA’s emergency use authorization. Another initiative was devising a canopy/tent to cover the patient allowing health care providers to work more safely with those who have tested positive.
