Summary
| Description | Dr. Margaret Brand discusses the damaging effect of Hansen's disease on vision and eye health. She notes that the disease once routinely resulted in blindness in sufferers, particularly in certain parts of the world. Latitude and climate affect this complication significantly, as shown in a 1937 study in Japan by Dr. M. Hayashi. Dr. Brand displays images of a healthy eye and compares that with a photo of an eye with ocular leprosy. She presents diagrams of parts of the eye, labeling each and explaining how it is affected, then shows multiple facial shots of people with diseased eyes. She makes recommendations for controlling the progression of ocular leprosy. Credits: Training Branch, U.S.P.H.S. Hospital presents. Transfer; National Hansen's Disease Program; 20060221; 2006-01. |
