Description (Critical) This program presents a current overview of amniocentesis including indications, preparation of patient, technique and complications. The presentation is generally well done, however, many deficiencies exist including superficial coverage of material, and failure to define early and late pregnancy amniocentesis. Thus, it is recommended with reservations for undergraduate medical and nursing students and allied health personnel involved in prenatal care. Amniocentesis is a relatively recent discovery that has minimized some of the danger and uncertainty of pregnancy and childbirth. Amniocentesis is typically performed for one of three reasons: diagnosis, therapy, or research. Perhaps most importantly, amniocentesis is crucial in discovering defects or fetal death as early as 14-18 weeks into the pregnancy.
