Summary

Description The purpose of this presentation is to describe Rh and ABO incompatibility. This objective is achieved with the aid of clinical subjects, charts, diagrams, and photographs. The history of the disease is reviewed first. Three diseases as described by ancient physicians are discussed and related to hemolytic disease of the newborn as we know it today. These include hydrops fetalis, icterus gravis neonatorum, and anemia pallida. Rh genetically related antigens are discussed, and the pathophysiology of Rh incompatibility is described in detail. The diagnosis of Rh incompatibility is achieved prenatally with blood typing of the mother and father, evaluation of maternal antibodies, and amniocentesis. At birth, the Coombs tests and hemoglobin and bilirubin determinations are performed on the infant.
