Summary

Description This film details the work and contributions of a local health department to its community and to a typical family, the Browns. Before their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Brown are tested for syphilis. Pregnant women and new mothers are provided instruction in health and infant care by public health nurses, in concert with their private physicians. A public health nurse is shown checking on a family member with a cough. A positive tuberculosis test follows, and the family member is treated immediately, so that the Brown baby is not infected. A nurse reminds the Browns to take their baby in for recommended immunizations, and the child of a neighbor who did not follow these recommendations is shown receiving treatment for diphtheria. Health department employees are shown testing water for typhoid, monitoring pollutants in streams and waterways, advising on proper outhouse and well construction, and supervising pasteurization of milk to kill toxins.
